LCDs for Rugged Environments

The Challenge

A global leader in test and measurement devices needed a small display for two families of battery-operated hand-held testers.  The primary concern was power conservation in order to extend usable battery life.  Migrating from their current LED display to a small piece of LCD glass, less than 24mm x 12mm, required far lower current and voltage, yet had to remain easily visible to the user.  Lumex provided product family differentiation through the use of custom display icons and screen printing on the glass to enhance the visual features.  And, despite being very different in overall size, both testers were expected to be equally effective in a rugged environment.

The Solution

To ensure reliability amidst temperature and vibration, Lumex engineered a pinned display for the larger tester to ensure stability, and a leadless display for the smaller tester, as the tight alignment of the on-board components provided the required support.
