Designed for compact products
Display selection is often a mechanical decision as much as an optical one. The front window, display body, PCB and surrounding components all compete for depth. A package that stands too far from the board can force a thicker enclosure or restrict where the board can sit.
The eight standard LDS-SMA models introduced here have an overall package depth of 2.1–2.5 mm, depending on digit size. Reducing the space occupied by the display gives engineers more freedom to develop slim front panels, compact control modules and low-profile electronic assemblies.
More freedom behind the panel
Use the available depth for the rest of the design: component placement, board positioning and the clearances required by the enclosure. A shallower display can make it easier to arrange the interface around those requirements.
More choice in the finished enclosure
A low-profile display gives engineers another way to approach a slim front panel while working within the enclosure’s mechanical requirements. Final panel and cover dimensions depend on the complete assembly.
The result is more flexibility at the product level: a slimmer appearance, a less constrained internal layout and a display that fits the intended panel design.
A thin package designed with assembly in mind
Saving space in the finished product matters most when the component also fits the manufacturing process. LDS-SMA displays are supplied in tape-and-reel packaging for automated placement and support reflow soldering, allowing the display to be integrated into an SMT assembly workflow.
Why the housing is 1.5 mm
The 1.5 mm plastic housing balances a slim profile with assembly clearance. The design was informed by SMT production feedback, which identified insufficient clearance in a thinner housing evaluated during development.
Housing thickness and complete package depth are different measurements. In the 0.39-inch model shown here, the side view shows a 1.50 mm housing plus a 0.60 mm substrate, giving a 2.10 mm overall depth. Across the standard lineup, overall depth is 2.1–2.5 mm.
Plan the display into your SMT workflow
Tape-and-reel supply and model-specific solder-pad layouts support planning the display alongside other surface-mount components. Use the selected model’s reflow profile when defining the soldering process.
The standard series is specified as RoHS compliant and lead-free. Review the current model drawing for its land pattern, assembly profile and handling requirements.
Keep the readout clear as the package gets thinner
A thin display still needs to look consistent from the front. With a short distance between the light source and segment face, uniform illumination is an important part of the package design. The LDS-SMA series is designed to limit visible hot spots within the segments and produce an even numeric appearance.
For timers, temperature indicators and other numeric interfaces, an even segment appearance supports a clean front-panel readout. Evaluate brightness, color and viewing conditions for the selected configuration and display window.
Choose the color for the environment, too
The standard red models are specified from -40 to +105°C, while the white models are specified from -40 to +85°C. The red models have the higher upper-temperature rating. Select for the conditions at the display’s location in the finished product, as well as the intended appearance.
Where display depth makes a difference
The following examples illustrate potential uses for a shallow numeric display. Suitability depends on the selected model, drive circuit and conditions at the display’s location in the product.
Appliance controls
Time, temperature and cycle status
Oven and dishwasher control panels are potential uses for time, temperature and cycle readouts. A shallow display can help keep the control assembly compact while leaving room for the board and adjacent controls. Select a model for the actual temperature at the display’s location behind the panel.
Home audio
A readout that fits a slim enclosure
Hi-fi systems and soundbars use numeric information for volume, track numbers and timers. A low-profile display can help preserve a slim front face and leave more flexibility for the internal electronics. Digit size, emitted color and the surrounding display window can be coordinated with the product’s appearance.
Industrial controls
Compact panels, clear numerical information
Timers, counters and temperature indicators often place a numeric readout beside buttons, connectors and other controls. The shallow display package supports compact control modules, while the choice of digit sizes lets designers match the readout to the available panel area and intended viewing conditions.

Compare the standard models
The initial lineup offers four single-digit heights in red and white. Compare package size, forward-voltage characteristics and temperature range to identify a starting point for your panel layout and drive circuit.

Build a display around your interface
A single digit in a standard color is only one way to use the thin-display platform. A timer, a multi-value control panel and a branded appliance interface can call for very different readout formats. Lumex can work with your requirements to explore the appropriate configuration.
Additional emitted colors
For projects that need a different appearance, discuss blue, pure green, amber or yellow with Lumex. These are options within the broader thin-display platform, beyond the eight standard red and white models listed above.
Two, three or four digits
Ask Lumex about multi-digit configurations for readouts such as elapsed time, temperatures and numerical settings. Bring the required digit count and panel window so the appropriate format and availability can be reviewed.
Custom formats and appearance
Custom thin display designs, face colors and segment colors can be discussed when a standard model does not match the intended interface. Share the display window, available depth, mounting approach, digit arrangement and color goals so the configuration can be reviewed as part of the complete product.
Custom colors and digit counts have their own construction and specifications. Lumex can help identify the appropriate option and confirm the mechanical and packaging details for your application.
A few questions before you start
Is 1.5 mm the total display thickness?
No. It describes the plastic housing. Overall package depth is 2.1–2.5 mm for the eight standard models listed above, depending on digit size. Use the selected model’s mechanical drawing when reviewing the complete assembly.
Do the red and white models have the same temperature range?
The standard red models are specified from -40 to +105°C and white models from -40 to +85°C. Select the model for the temperature at the display’s location in the product.
What should I provide for a custom display discussion?
A front-panel drawing or sketch is a useful starting point. Include the available depth, display window, digit count and height, emitted color, mounting preference and operating environment. Lumex can then help narrow the configuration and design requirements.
